In addition to leading the St. Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force, Dr. Alexander Garza will shift from his role as Chief Medical Officer to a newly recreated position of Chief Community Health Officer for SSM Health. This allows Dr. Garza to focus on important work of advocacy, health policy, social justice and address inequities, not just in health, but in society.

SSM Health Chief Medical Officer Dr. Alexander Garza has been tapped to lead a national committee on the use of technology to combat future public health emergencies. Dr. Garza has also been heading the St. Louis Metro Pandemic Task Force. He joins executives from some of the largest US companies and organizations, including Microsoft, CVS Health, Facebook and The Brookings Institution. The committee will review the use of technology during health crises and consider topics such as thermal maps, artificial intelligence, wearables and robotics. The Head of the St. Louis Pandemic Task Force Dr. Alex Garza says he’s feeling more confident about the reopening but is concerned about new analytics.  Hospitalizations are actually the lowest since tracking began in March. Given the data the task force has now, they’re forecasting shows we could be looking at another wave of coronavirus. The task force believes by middle to late June, the second wave in St. Louis could be worse than the first. Dr. Garza encourages all to wear masks.

To celebrate National Hospitals Week, SSM Health Foundation – St. Louis Board Members assembled and delivered “Essentials for the Essentials” care packages that included $30 Schnucks gift cards, a blessing and a Kind Bar for 1,100 frontline caregivers at SSM Health DePaul Hospital, SSM Health St. Clare Hospital, SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital, SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital – St. Charles, SSM Health St. Joseph – Lake Saint Louis and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital. Due to the generosity of benefactors and corporate partners, over $50,000 worth of grocery store gift cars were distributed.

Significant news in the treatment of COVID-19. Yesterday, the FDA granted emergency use authorization for remdesivir, a drug found to have have promise in a nationwide NIH trial. SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital was the only site in the region participating in the study. Researcher Sarah George, MD, explained why the drug may be a difference maker with St. Louis Magazine.

The RGA Foundation will donate $1.5 million to help support COVID-19 relief efforts. Specifically, the RGA Foundation plans to provide grants to support programs assisting health care professionals and frontline workers, as well as other individuals impacted directly by COVID-19. Among the programs receiving funding are Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), which is caring for patients suffering from COVID-19, offering health education and mental health support, and providing training for vital infection control measures in health facilities around the world, and the SSM Health Foundation – St. Louis Urgent Response Fund, which provides vital resources for the most critical needs of frontline healthcare providers and the patients they serve.

The first COVID-19 patient at St. Clare is released. Daughter of patient donates $8,000 for iPads so that families can stay connected with their loved ones hospitalized with COVID-19. Daughter of patient says, iPad saved her father’s life and raises an additional $16,000 for iPads to be distributed to other SSM Health hospitals.

St. Louis regional health care systems launch St. Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force. Dr. Alex Garza, Chief Medical Officer of SSM Health, to serve as incident commander of new task force established to manage health systems’ preparation of COVID-19 patient surge across the St. Louis region. The Task Force includes the St. Louis metropolitan area’s largest health care systems, working together to coordinate capacity, staffing, supplies and other issues to prepare for a coming surge of patients. They are also coordinating with public health departments, elected leaders and state and federal agencies to provide the best possible care to patients in the weeks ahead.

SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital and Saint Louis University is studying an investigational treatment for COVID-19, the disease causing the current coronavirus outbreak. The trial, which is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), may be conducted in up to approximately 75 sites across the country and worldwide.
