Pop the Stigma 5k Walk/Run

August 28, 2021

Benefiting SSM Health Behavioral Health

Every person in our communities deserves access to compassionate, holistic care that address both their physical and mental wellbeing — and freedom from the stigma that too often causes patients to delay getting care for mental and behavioral health concerns. That’s why, each year, the Young Leaders of SSM Health are honored to provide a platform for decreasing the stigma around behavioral health and fundraising to support SSM Behavioral Health through the annual Pop the Stigma 5k Walk/Run. In light of COVID-19, mental/behavioral health awareness is even more important as anxieties resulting from the pandemic have had a profound effect on the behavioral health of all individuals, not just those with diagnosed conditions.

This year’s event will take place on August 28, 2021 at Tower Grove Park. The family-friendly 5k run/walk is open to participants of all ages and fitness levels, so don’t miss out on a day of beautiful scenery, fresh air, and festive giving!

  • Registration: $30 (includes t-shirt and runner’s bib)
  • Day of Event Check-in: 6:30am – 7:30am
  • Race start time: 8:00am
  • Awards and activities for participants, including an award for the top overall Male/Female pushing a stroller!

All funds raised through the Pop the Stigma 5k Walk/Run will support SSM Health Behavioral Health Care patients and providers in the St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson County, and Metro East regions.

Sponsorship opportunities for this year’s Pop the Stigma 5k Walk/Run are still available. Learn more about sponsoring this and other SSM Health Foundation – St. Louis events here.

Unable to participate in this year’s event? You can still help us reduce the stigma around mental health and make an impact on our communities by making a gift to support SSM Health Behavioral Health Care efforts.

Thank you for your interest in helping to break the stigma around behavioral health and ensure that everyone in our communities has access to exceptional and holistic health care.

“Being a part of SSM is personal. The care and compassion they provided to my family was really helpful during a time I needed it most.”
– Greg Hesser, Chairman SSM Health Foundation – St. Louis Board of Trustees
“SSM really listens to us. Because their mission is grounded in the same mission that I think the core values are of a loving family. Their mission is that the patient’s comfort and healing come first.”
– Sue Schaeffer, Grateful Patient Family
“Everyone did really well as a team in my stay of the labor and delivery. And my babies are cared for very well in the NICU. I would recommend this hospital to anyone in the world. Thank you for a great and comfortable stay and for always caring for my needs.”
– Grateful Patient
“It was a scary moment, but they were there with us…not only to take care of my wife, but also – all of us family members. With certain protocols in place, I didn’t think my wife would be here. I hate to imagine if she would have been hospitalized somewhere else.”
– Husband of Grateful Patient
“The people of SSM Health made me feel like I was going to survive when I didn’t believe it myself. I really believe they are the reason I am here today. SSM is my guardian angel.”
– Gary Foree, Cancer Survivor and SSM Health Cancer Care Volunteer Advocate
“SSM Health care workers often see their work as a calling rather than just a profession. I am glad that they feel called, because otherwise they wouldn’t be able to do everything they need to do to support these patients…it has been all hands-on deck, and they have really risen to the challenge and done so cheerfully because they do think it is a calling. They’re the ones in the room where difficult conversations are held. And sometimes they’re the ones holding the hands of patients as they’re passing into the next world.”
– Tina Garrison, SSM Health St. Clare Hospital President
“To show our appreciation for the exceptional care and compassion I received from the nurses, doctors, and staff at SSM Health we have chosen to make a gift in their honor through our Honor Your Caregiver program. I hope you, too, will join me in showing your appreciation for the phenomenal care you received.”
– Josh Terrio, Grateful Patient
